"I remember looking at the audience and thinking 'imagining them naked doesn’t work'"
Name: San Rao
Character Name(s)/Role: Steve, Tango Maureen dancer, Seasons of Love soloist, part of the Police and Contact dancer.
Tell us about your characters: There isn’t much to say about Steve, but he is a member of the life support group trying to help the others morally as he’s going through the same problems as the rest of the members in the group.
Is there anything in your own life that helps you connect with your characters? Fortunately I don’t face any of the problems that my character faces so there isn’t much that helps me connect to the character.
What’s your favourite song in the show and why? My favourite song would have to be ‘La Vie Boheme’ because its just such an active song with a lot going on which I think will excite the audience. The audience gets put through a mixed emotional journey whilst watching the show so I feel its important to have songs like ‘La Vie Boheme’ to cheer them up!
What other shows have you done? 'Lord of the Flies' as Jack, 'Cabaret' as Cliff, 'Pornography' as Bomber, 'Spring Awakening' as Hanschen and 'Earthquakes in London' as Tom.
Can you recall a particularly memorable on-stage moment? When I came out on stage for the first time playing Jack in Lord of the Flies I remember looking at the audience and thinking “imagining them naked doesn’t work”.
Can you remember the first time you thought “I want to be in theatre”? After getting the first ever compliment about my acting in school.
What are you enjoying most about being part of Simply Theatre? The experience of being part of a family who all want the same thrill while performing.
Is there room in your life for anything else apart from singing, dancing & acting? Chicken.
